چکیده

We propose a general one-dimensional continuous formulation to analyze the vibrational modes of antennalike nanomechanical resonators consisting of two symmetric arrays of cantilevers affixed to a central nanobeam. The cantilever arrays can have arbitrary density and length profile along the beam. We obtain the secular equation that allows for the determination of their frequency spectrum and illustrate the results on the particular examples of structures with constant or alternating cantilever length profiles. We show that our analytical results capture the vibration spectrum of such resonators and elucidate key relationships that could prove advantageous for experimental device performance. Furthermore, using a perturbative approach to treat the nonlinear and dissipative dynamics of driven structures, we analyze the anharmonic coupling between two specific widely spaced modes of the coupled-element device, with direct application to experiments. © 2009 American Institute of Physics. Model of response spectrum and modal interaction in coupled nanomechanical resonators

We develop a simple continuum model to analyze the vibrational modes of a nanomechanical multi-element structure. In this model, arrays of sub-micron cantilevers located symmetrically on both sides of the central clamped-clamped nanobeam are replaced by a continuum. In this approach, the punctual shear forces exerted by the cantilevers on the central beam are smoothed out and the equations of m...

Nonlinear dynamics and chaos in two coupled nanomechanical resonators

Two elastically coupled nanomechanical resonators driven independently near their resonance frequencies show intricate nonlinear dynamics. The dynamics provide a scheme for realizing a nanomechanical system with tunable frequency and nonlinear properties. For large vibration amplitudes, the system develops spontaneous oscillations of amplitude modulation that also show period-doubling transitio...

Kerr nonlinearities and nonclassical states with superconducting qubits and nanomechanical resonators

We propose the use of a superconducting charge qubit capacitively coupled to two resonant nanomechanical resonators to generate Yurke-Stoler states, i.e., quantum superpositions of pairs of distinguishable coherent states 180° out of phase with each other. This is achieved by effectively implementing Kerr nonlinearities induced through the application of a strong external driving field in one o...

Superconducting qubit storage and entanglement with nanomechanical resonators.

We propose a quantum computing architecture based on the integration of nanomechanical resonators with Josephson-junction phase qubits. The resonators are GHz-frequency, dilatational disk resonators, which couple to the junctions through a piezoelectric interaction. The system is analogous to a collection of tunable few-level atoms (the Josephson junctions) coupled to one or more electromagneti...

Synchronization of many nanomechanical resonators coupled via a common cavity field.

Using amplitude equations, we show that groups of identical nanomechanical resonators, interacting with a common mode of a cavity microwave field, synchronize to form a single mechanical mode which couples to the cavity with a strength dependent on the squared sum of the individual mechanical-microwave couplings. Classically this system is dominated by periodic behavior which, when analyzed usi...
